Contrary to what one might assume, speculation by noteworthy individuals about the possibility of an African American President of the United States has not been a frequent or prominent theme in our political conversations. For nearly two centuries the very idea of such a person in the Oval Office seemed such an improbability that hardly any intellectual energy was expended guessing when and how it might happen.
